Visit of the Delegation of the European Court of Human Rights

Today, in the frame of an official visit to Georgia the President of European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) Mr. Robert Spano, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Georgia Mr. Lado Chanturia and Registrar of the Section V of the ECtHR Mr. Victor Soloveytchik visited the Constitutional Court of Georgia. Members of the Delegation held a working meeting with the Judges of the Constitutional Court of Georgia.

The parties discussed the issues related to the functioning of the European system of human rights protection, inter alia, the interaction between the constitutional review at the national level with the development of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, procedural and substantive aspects of the Protocol No. 16 to the European Convention on Human Rights, the legal proceedings of the European Court of Human Rights and recent case law of the ECtHR in relation to Georgia. Furthermore, the parties focused on the importance of bilateral cooperation and an institutional dialogue between the Constitutional Court of Georgia and the European Court of Human Rights, in particular, on the way of Georgia’s integration with the European
Union.

Mr. Robert Spano expressed support towards European aspirations of Georgia and made a particular emphasis on the role of effective judiciary in the process of developing European democracy based on the rule of law and human rights. The Judges of the Constitutional Court of Georgia thanked the members of the delegation of the European Court of Human Rights for their visit and shared experience.
