President of the Constitutional Court gave a speech at a public lecture at Heidelberg University

On July 25, 2023, President of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, Prof. Dr. Merab Turava, at the invitation of the Department of Public Law of the Law Faculty of Heidelberg University, presented a report to the legal audience at a public lecture held in Heidelberg. The topic of the report was: "Georgia on the way to the European Union - constitutional law, constitutional jurisdiction, the need for reform".

Within the framework of the report, issues of cooperation between Georgia and the European Union were discussed, including the common values of the European Union and Georgia; Key stages of Georgia's rapprochement with the European Union; EU support for Georgia; the “12 priorities” predetermined for Georgia to obtain the status of a candidate for EU membership. In addition, the presentation of Article 78 of the Constitution of Georgia, which defines the obligation of the constitutional bodies to take all measures to ensure the full integration of Georgia in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, aroused special interest.

Within the framework of the report, special attention was also focused on the issues of constitutional control. In particular, the issues of institutional arrangement, powers and current practice of constitutional justice of the Constitutional Court were discussed.

After the report, an interactive question-and-answer session was held. The event was attended by professors, students, other academic staff and interested persons from different fields of law.
