Constitutional Court Summer School has begun
On July 22, the Summer School of the Constitutional Court of Georgia was officially opened, with welcoming remarks by the Vice President of the Constitutional Court, Teimura Tughushi; the Head of the EU Court Support Project, Judge Renate Winter; and Mariam Vardosanize, representative of the USAID-funded Rule of Law Support Program in Georgia.
Over the course of two weeks, the school participants will receive lectures on various topical issues of constitutional law, including the specifics of constitutional control in the US and Europe, standards for restricting human rights, and issues of covert surveillance and personal data protection.
The participants of the summer school will have the opportunity to learn about the practice of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, the Supreme Court of the United States of America, the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union, and will also participate in mock trials.
The lectures of the summer school will be led by Teimuraz Tughushi, Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Georgia; Judge Renate Winter, Head of the EU Court Support Project; as well as invited professors and experts: Jason Desanto - Professor at Northwestern University School of Law (USA); Richard Vogler - Professor at the University of Sussex (UK); Nora N. Lloydian - Director of the Information Law and Policy Centre at the Institute for Advanced Law Studies (IALS), University of London, Professor at the University of Cambridge (UK); Tamar Kaldani - Personal Data Protection Inspector of Georgia (2013-2019); David Gabekhadze - Head of the Legal Support Department of the Operational Technical Agency of the Georgian Public Prosecutor's Office; Givi Baghdavadze - Head of the International Relations Division of the Legal Support Department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia.
The aim of the Constitutional Court Summer School is to enhance the professional knowledge of future lawyers in constitutional and human rights law.
28 best law students from Georgian universities were selected to participate in the summer school as a result of a competition. In addition, it is noteworthy that outstanding participants of the school will have the opportunity to continue their work in the court through internships and subsequent employment.
This year, the Constitutional Court is hosting the 12th stream of the Summer School. The Summer School is organized with the financial participation of the EU Court Support Project, the USAID-funded Program “Supporting the Rule of Law in Georgia” (EWMI/PROLoG) and in cooperation with Grigol Robakidze University.
It is noteworthy that the graduates of the Summer School occupy leading positions in various public and private structures, which is an indicator of the success of the project.
The Constitutional Court Summer School will end on August 1.
